Where Real Estate Gets Its Dirt

The Vendor and the iPad

The Vendor and the iPad

This is part II of my thoughts about the iPad and real estate.  You can read my first post on W&R Studios‘ blog Lightning|Twice = >The Realtor and the iPad

Seems like there are a lot of people on both sides of the argument of whether the iPad will have any impact on real estate.

One thing I agree with is that MLS systems are pretty much DOA for the iPad. A lot of today’s MLS systems require Internet Explorer and don’t work well (or at all) with other browsers.

The future doesn’t look bright either, since most MLS Vendors, to solve their browser compatibility issues,  are running to platforms like Adobe’s FLEX or Microsoft’s Silverlight.  And as we all know by now Apple doesn’t like Flash, much less anything from Microsoft.  ( One interesting side note is that FBS’ MLS System, with its ironically named “flex” MLS isn’t jumping on the Flash bandwagon.)

But lets look at the iPad as a sales tool for Vendors.  I think of it as a mini projector.  Something you can hold in your hands that you can easily demo a web app or run a slide show.  Think about a trade show floor, where your space is limited, now every person is essentially a “demo station”.  Or at a broker preview meeting, where you are causally meeting groups of Realtors, now you can just carry it around like a sales binder.

Or how about taking orders?  A recent startup called Square announced an easy way to accept credit card and Paypal payments via an iPhone.  So this seems that it will easily translate to the iPad  Check out this short video about their service.

One danger here that I said I would mention in my previous post is that the device itself might outshine your product.  Meaning you might end up answering more questions about your iPad than your product.  I believe this will be short lived as the iPad and iPad like devices become more mainstream.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about how you might use the iPad as a sales device.  It will be interesting to see how many iPads we see at NAR Midyear and the other trade shows and conferences coming in 2010.

First up:

Cloud CMA launch!
Yup, we plan to officially launch our latest web app, Cloud CMA at the show. We will have a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT about this later this week so STAY TUNED!

I’m doing “CONNECT LAB 2”:

Vendors Only: Selling Technology Solutions in Real Estate
“You’ve got an application. A service. Something you think is killer. But you have no idea how to market and sell it. Learn how to price your product, message it, and get in front of the people who will buy it in this session led by one of the most battle-tested marketing and bus dev executives in the business.”

I’ll be giving a short presentation on what I’m calling “The Twin Peaks of real estate app sales”

I’m kind of bummed a bit because Michael Wurzer is moderating one of the “INNOVATION TRACKS” around the same time:

TRACK 3 – The MLS
2PM to 5PM

MIke has a killer line up of topics and panelists.

RPR Reverb: Should MLSs Love it or Fear it?
Breaking Data Taboos for Fun and Profit
For Those Who Think Big: Charter an Alternate Strategy for Your MLS
Not if, But How To: Work Towards Best Practices for MLS Data Sharing

Ought to be a good show. See you there!

Inman Connect NYC – See you there!

I’m kind of anxious for 2009 to be over with and getting started on 2010. Which is why I’m super pumped for Inman Connect in New York City, which is January 13th to 15th. The list of speakers looks fantastic, as usual. I guess I most interested in see Jason Fried of 37signals.

They are bringing back ConnectTech which was super fun in San Francisco, can’t wait to see what the next set of developers come up with this time!

My company, W&R Studios, will be exhibiting in Start Up Alley on Wednesday. We will be showcasing Cloud CMA. I’m told that spots for Start Up Alley are sold out but Inman has 1 8X10 booth, and 3 demo stations are left. Contact Alice Myerhoff if you are interested.

I’m going to be speaking at a “Connect Lab” on Thursday, the 14th. It’s called Vendors Only: Selling Technology Solutions in Real Estate. So please join me for that session, ought to be fun.

Plus to top it off they have super deal right now. For only $939 ($839 if you are an Inman premium member) you not only get a registration for Inman NYC but Inman SF 2010 as well! Detail are here: Inman Connect NYC Registration

NAR 2009 Death List?

One of the many weird things last week was how many companies were declared dead or dying. Rob Hahn, aka The Nortorious R.O.B., sure lived up to this moniker, had the largest body count with 3 companies.

Rob’s post last Friday, at the RPR session, declared both eNeighborhoods and OnBoard were dying.

Rob went on later on to declare “the death of RPR” that Saturday. Ouch!

Brian Boero echoed the death theme in a blog post by repeating the often whispered nickname given to the RPR as “The Reaper”.

Others were even declaring the death of MLS! Or that LPS‘ “uber deal” with NAR, was a stab in the heart to First American.

Another interesting story I heard was that C.A.R.’s calREDD initiative was going to be scuttled (remorphed in to something else?) in the next month or so, but this is old news to me.

This doesn’t sound like a NAR conference, it sounds like a Slasher Film!!

I’m not sure I agree with all these dire predictions but one thing is for sure, a lot of blood will be spilled.

Cloud CMA launch party tonight!

If you think the RPR announcement is the only big news you'll hear this week, you're wrong!

rumors

While it will be hard (if not impossible) to compete with the RPR-LPS announcement this past week, I assure you that there will be at least one other significant announcement this week having to do with the real estate franchise industry.

Every N.A.R. Convention is a snowflake…

Snowflake: formation (DI00310)

I’m counting the days. 22 days, to be exact. 22 days until San Diego is engulfed with the Realtors and Vendors from all over the country. “Chart a winning course” is the theme for the 2009 REALTORS® Conference & Expo.

3 things I know:

A lot of deal making is going on…
A lot of typing is being done by developers…
And a whole lot of bullshit is being thrown around…

3 things I’m curious about:

How many people will show up?
Anyone got any money to spend?
How do they feel about the future?

What I also know is that 2, maybe 3 big announcements have a chance of being announced, one of them a game changer.

What should you be looking out for? Here’s a few clues….

The Amalgamator
The Swoop
and The Tumbler

But then again, every N.A.R annual convention is a snowflake, no one is like another. Then, just before you know it, it all it melts away….
