Where Real Estate Gets Its Dirt

CMLS 2008 "After Hours" Part I

Well I didn’t do such a good job of any live coverage via VendorAlley.com. I did most of the live coverage via the Vendor Alley twitter account. So I thought I would serialize the recap in two, maybe three parts…

To start off, I didn’t see Prince. I guess the Purple One was out of town. : (

I can say John Mosey and his staff at NorthStarMLS did a great job. The agenda was great, the attendance was great, the Millennium Hotel…..not so much. The food however was fantastic, so compliments to the hotel chef!

The Golf Tournament was hosted by eNeighborhhoods held at North Oaks, a private country club in St. Paul. Fantastic course! Somehow I was paired with two titans of industry Chip Roach of Fox & Roach and Ron Peltier of HomeServices. Freaking Ron Peltier! Rounding out the group was Tom Diffley. Tom was a super nice guy and hosted the awards ceremony and should be a touring comedian.

Who won the golf tournament? – My group….natch! (not a misprint)

Downtown Minneapolis had a cool scene going on. Some people told me that they had really cleaned it up for the Republican Convention. No matter, lots of unique restaurants and bars. The first night I joined John Mosey, and a few others, at Seven. Under the stars and in the shadows of downtown Minneapolis skyscrapers we ate sushi, drank (from drinks served by John Mosey’s daughter, more on her later) and talked around the outdoor fire pit where Kristen Carr held court. I kept repeating in my head…”never go big on the first night…never go big on the first night..never…”

One night I had dinner with the Brian de Schepper and Matt Eide from Tarasoft and two lovely ladies Patti Sesto (now Patti Dauer, Congrats!) of Heartland MLS and Suzanne Harris of OnBoard at Maza.

Muy bueno gourmet Mexican food!

Another night (maybe two) I found myself at Prohibition,

a bar at the 27th floor of the W hotel.

Very cool art deco type of vibe. Cozy atmosphere where tables and chairs were found behind all sorts of corners and spaces.

But that was just the beginning. Come by tomorrow for Part II of CMLS 2008 -“After Hours”. You’ll hear all about lawn bowling, John Mosey’s daughter, the kissing room, and the home of the butterknife steak!

Council of MLS conference is just around the corner!

We will be giving you live coverage of the 51st annual CMLS conference from Minneapolis, MN next week. Both on VendorAlley and via our Twitter account

See you on the golf course, and save some extra drink tickets for me!

CMLS 2008 Conference just around the corner (Oct 1 -3)

John Mosey of NorthStarMLS will be hosting this year’s Council of MLS Conference in Minneapolis, MN

CMLS is the best MLS conference of the year and it looks like John has put together a great agenda. I think it’s the first conference I’ve been to that includes lawn bowling, nice!!

If you haven’t registered for the event remember you must be a member of CMLS to attend the event. To join CMLS click here.

RETS Geeks Hit Chi-town

The RESO/RETS Conference is this week. It’s being held in Chicago and the Conrad Chicago Hotel. So if you see a bunch of guys with MacBook Pros walking down Michigan Avenue, that’s them.

Among the topics they will be discussing will be the June 2009 RETS Compliance. According to their website:

“The Real Estate Transaction Standards (RETS) provides a vendor neutral, secure approach to exchanging listing information between the broker and the MLS. In order to ensure that the goal of maintaining an orderly marketplace is maintained, and to further establish REALTOR® information as the trusted data source, MLS organizations owned and operated by associations of REALTOR® will comply with the RETS standards by June 2009, and keep current with the standard’s new versions by implementing new releases of RETS within one year from ratification. ”

Reminds me of Y2K. I guess in this case it would be “Y2.96K” Or maybe one of the RETS geeks could convert that to HEX for me.

P.S. I’ve given Dan Woolley some Vendor Alley swag, including our new baseball cap and t-shirt. I told him to hand them out to the most deserving.

Inman Real Estate Connect Preview

Next week is Inman Real Estate Connect in SF, also known as “The Brad Inman Fund Raiser”…. I kid..I kid.

I’m looking forward to the conference and being in San Francisco.

Looks like Brad and his team have put together another great agenda. I’m stoked to see Merlin Mann I enjoy his blog and look forward to hearing what he has to say. The Blogger’s Connect agenda looks promising too.

Also what struck me as interesting is Sherry Chris’s new BH&G franchise is “officially” launching. I’ve been following their blog and you can sense the great spirit of starting something new. Something I am totally in tune with as well. This industry needs new and aggressive companies to lead the charge. Good Luck to Sherry and her team!

There are a bunch of parties going on all over the city. If you’ve got something to announce feel free to post a comment or send me an email at vendor.alley@gmail.com and I’ll put up a post.

eNeighborhoods gets its act together…

Dave Rifkin was promoted to Vice President of Agent Services for eNeighborhoods

Rick Sherwood was promoted to Director of Enterprises Service for eNeighborhoods

Michael Hayes was promoted to Director of Enterprise Services for eNeighborhoods

I wanted to say a few things. Dominion Enterprises showed a lot of smarts promoting these guys. Dave Rifkin has been in the real estate technology business since the mid 90s. He’s negotiated contracts with large MLS providers, help design product and more recently started an inside sales team from scratch at eNeighborhoods. He and Andy Woolley were the two biggest forces driving growth and my first company IRIS, LLC. IRIS would not have been a success without Dave.

Rick Sherwood, also an IRIS alum, is the whole package. Rick is very smart, has a great feel for the game, a good eye for product functionality design, and very tenacious. Rick lasted through (survived) all the bullshit at what began as Moore Data and is now FNRES MLS. You don’t go through that experience without being an A player and having a deep understanding of the MLS real estate technology industry.

Michael Hayes, a Wyldfyre alum, is another A player in the game. It’s a well known fact that Michael’s charisma can be tracked from space. People in the International Space Station see two things when look down at earth, the great wall of China and a bright white light coming from Los Gatos, California. When eNeighborhoods acquired WyldFyre Technologies from HomeStore (Move), we realized right away that the best thing we could do is give a smart and creative guy like Michael anything he needed. And what he has accomplished has been amazing.

Here’s the story from our friends at RIS Media.

eNeighborhoods Announces Promotions in Enterprise, Agent Services Divisions

RISMEDIA, May 19, 2008-eNeighborhoods, a division of Dominion Enterprises, announced the promotions of key staff members to further the company’s real estate technology and marketing initiatives. eNeighborhoods, says the company, delivers real estate technology to more than 400,000 desktops around the world.

Peter Ill, president of Dominion Enterprises real estate businesses, announced the promotion of David Rifkin to vice president of eNeighborhoods Agent Services. Rifkin’s new role includes agent sales and marketing as well as working with multiple listing services (MLS) organizations.

Joining Rifkin’s team as manager of Dominion Data Services is Wendy McDaniel. McDaniel will be responsible for the continued growth of the company’s Internet Data Exchange (IDX) program, and maintaining relationships with MLS organizations. eNeighborhoods operates the industry’s largest network of IDX websites, compiling more than 3.8 million IDX listings from over 450 MLS organizations on behalf of their broker and agent customers.

“The growth in our Agent Services division continues moving forward under Dave Rifkin’s leadership,” Ill said. “These actions will ensure that we continue to deliver relevant products and services for agents competing in today’s tough markets. Dave Rifkin is a real estate industry and eNeighborhoods veteran. We’re happy to welcome him to the senior management team, and to bring Wendy McDaniel aboard to manage Data Services.”

eNeighborhoods Vice President of Enterprise Services Andy Woolley also announced the promotions of Michael Hayes and Rick Sherwood. Both Hayes and Sherwood will become directors in eNeighborhoods’ Enterprise Services division.

“eNeighborhoods delivers marketing, lead generation, and data-sharing tools to leading MLS and broker organizations in the United States, Canada, and Australia,” Woolley said. “Few people have the marketing, technology and real estate industry expertise that Michael and Rick bring to the team in supporting our large enterprise customers.”

Marriott Wardman Park Lobby Bar

WTF? The new lounge/euro vibe of the lobby bar at the Wardman Park sucks. It reminded me of the SNL sketch of “The Schoeners” with their weird furniture. The seats are very uncomfortable and, to be honest, the layout makes it almost impossible to cruise the area and stop for a quick chat. Patrons I talked to kept sliding off the plastic cushions that were velcroed on to the seat backs, not cool.

While I did like the new placement of the longer bar the seating area was just plain a disaster area.

Well the news broke on Inman…

Greg Robertson and Dan Woolley leave eNeighborhoods.

You can read it all here.

Thanks for all the great comments and good wishes, keep ’em coming, Dan and I will need all the encouragement/love/help/karma we can get!

I’m in D.C. at the NAR Midyear show. I’ve reactivated my twitter account, twitter.com/VendorAlley
